SJARMS is very excited to have singer, songwriter, guitarist Terry Rivel perform for our July, 2019 meeting.
He will perform for us on Monday, July 8, 2019 at 7 pm at the Medford Memorial Community Center, 21 South Main Street, Medford, NJ.
Guests and Visitors $10 at the door.

Please park in the gravel lot behind the Center and enter the building through the back porch entrance.
Of course we will have an all-level acoustic jam after Terry performs until 9:25 pm.
As always, we can utilize the various rooms on the first floor of the Center for jamming.
Just a reminder, SJARMS is allowed to use the first floor only. We do not have access to the 2nd floor of the building.
About Terry:
Terry Rivel grew up in South Philadelphia. One of his favorite things to do as a child, after playing monsters and dinosaurs, was to listen to his parents’ records, which included the likes of “Guitar Boogie” by Arthur Smith. His mother and father both had a love of popular music. After turning eleven, there was Ricky Nelson, with James Burton on guitar, and Duane Eddy. So it’s a wonder he didn’t turn out to be a proficient lead guitarist! But learning guitar seemed too intimidating at the time.
Later, after his family moved to South Jersey, there would be Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Byrds and Creedence. Then he heard Bob Dylan. It was easy to emulate that style, plus the songs of Dylan were so powerful. And his mother started bringing home country music records, and there was no turning back. He was literally introduced to both artists at the same time with a Sun record titled “Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams”. And then Bob Dylan goes country, and there’s REALLY no turning back!
One of Terry’s first performances was the Perimeter Coffeehouse at Rutgers, Camden. He made many friends there who sang and played instruments, including Bob Andrews, one of the many local artists who were an influence on Terry. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, along with raising a family with three sons, Terry performed mostly solo, and also started a country music band that lasted four years. Heavy influences along the way were Jerry Jeff Walker, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Emmylou Harris. In 1985 Terry began writing songs and, with another band around 1989, opened for Willie Nelson on the Jersey shore at a venue called Cowboys.
Terry has been writing songs ever since, and at the end of the 90’s, Terry had the pleasure of being one of several acts (a booked open stage) to open for the late great Dave Van Ronk. Along the way he has developed his stage presence , incorporating humor into his performances, even to the point of doing impressions, as well as presenting humorous stories. In 2006 Terry released an EP titled LOOKING FOR JUNE, and in 2011 a full-length CD titled BROKEN PEOPLE, which was produced by Jimmy Heffernan, who also did some of the instrumental work.
Through the years Terry has played at numerous venues as a solo performer, with the bands Rodeo Wind, the Ghostriders and lost Highway, and in a duo called Silver Wings. Venues have included the Albert Music Hall in Waretown, NJ; the Mermaid Inn in Phila., PA; Circlewood Coffeehouse in Cherry Hill, NJ; Barrington Coffeehouse in Barrington, NJ; Bus Stop Cafe in Pitman, NJ; Malelani Cafe in Phila., PA; Iron Plow Winery in Columbus, NJ; and Time Out Entertainment & Sports Bar in Barrington, NJ. And then there were performances at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and at the Sundown Music Series at Haddon Lake Park, Haddon Heights, NJ. He also played several times at Glenside House Concerts, and has been a guest on many radio and internet shows, including Ray Naylor’s THE PERFORMING SONGWRITER and Lance Fingles’ Gashouseradio.com. There’s been a little traveling involved, too! Performances at the People’s Voice Cafe in NYC, and in Potter County, PA, most frequently at Olga Gallery, Cafe & Bistro.
Terry has been described as having soothing vocals, but he sometimes gets a little bluesy and bluegrassy (now that’s a word!), and definitely countrified! His guitar playing on his Martin HD-28 goes from country flatpicking to crisp fingerpicking. His performances are quite fun, and he’s even been told that one can easily understand the lyrics!
